1. Introduction

The search can be time consuming and sometimes tedious task. How can make it easier? How do deal with situations such as:

“I just join as new postgraduate students and I am not sure how to do a literature search”
“I have been in research for some time now but I spend a lot of time to get the articles I want”
“I am sure I have downloaded the article but I am not able to find it”
“I wanted to write a new paper, how can I manage the references in the shortest possible time?”
“I have many references, some of
my old papers, and some of my current research. Sometimes, they are so
many that I can’t recall where I have kept them in my folders!”
“I have written an article and I am not able to find a proper Journal”
"I want to increase the citation of my papers, how do I do?"
We need an effective search strategy
can save hours of wasted research time and provide a clear direction for
your research. The benefits of attending this workshop are numerous and
include learning how to change the direction of searching to discover
and how to use more efficient the tools that are available through the
Net.
2. Objective

The workshop seeks to serve the following objectives:

To help
students who seek to reduce the search time by expanding the knowledge
of researchers to more effectively use the "tools" that are available
through the Net.*
To evaluate the types of literature that researchers will encounter.
To convert the information on the search for a written document.
To help researchers learn how to search and analyze the right journal to submit.
To promote their publication for further citation.
* For more information on this workshop, see the Research Tools web page.

These two session workshops in one day, aim to help
research students in order to reduce research time by developing
researcher knowledge to use more effectively the “Tools” which are
available through the net. Research Tools is the skill to understand and
use information technology tools to carry out research, including the
use of discipline-related software and online resources.

The online “Research Tools” box is included over 700
tools. However, the speaker tries to introduce all necessary tools to
postgraduate students in a simple and applicable way.

3. Who should attend?

The workshop is aimed at postgraduate students, young
academics and researchers who have started his/her research and would
like to increase the effectiveness of the research. The e-skills learned
from the workshop are useful across various research disciplines and
research institutions. Participants should have the requisite computer

The impact of emergent virtual leadership competencies on team effectiveness

Title:The impact of emergent virtual leadership competencies on team effectiveness

Citation:Paul
Ziek, Stacy Smulowitz, (2014) "The impact of emergent virtual
leadership competencies on team effectiveness", Leadership &
Organization Development Journal, Vol. 35 Iss: 2
Article type:Research paper
Publisher:Emerald Group Publishing Limited
Abstract:Purpose
- The research on virtual team leadership does well to describe the
skills that are needed to guide and direct effective teams. However what
is presupposed in the previous research is that virtual teams have
assigned leaders. That is, leaders were either management, appointed by
management or were chosen by the team itself. Yet in today’s global
economy not all virtual teams have assigned leaders, instead many
virtual team leaders emerge on their own to direct the group’s actions.
The current study examines which emergent leadership competencies most
impact virtual team effectiveness.

Design/methodology/approach
- This is a mixed method study where both a participant survey and
content analysis of actual participant messages are used to determine
the competencies of emergent virtual team leaders. The research
participants for the current study were required to work in assigned
teams on organizational case analyses. At the end of each case, teams
presented their solutions in the form of final recommendations designed
to fix the problem present in the case.

Findings -
Results indicate that not only do leaders emerge in virtual teams, but
in most cases multiple leaders emerge. Results also show that the model
that best describes team effectiveness includes the competencies of
asking questions, cognitive and creative ability and vision setting.

Originality/value
- The contribution of the current study is that it extends the research
on emergent virtual team leadership by introducing the idea that this
type of leadership is often a collective action among individuals. It
also advances a model of emergent virtual team leadership as a practice
of communication. The better emergent virtual team leaders are at
communicating to team members the more effective the team will be in
completing tasks and projects, which in turn can lead to a more
effectively functioning business unit.

Examining the Impact of Collaboration Technology Training
Support on Virtual Team Collaboration Effectiveness
by Wright, Sharon L., Ph.D., NOVA SOUTHEASTERN
UNIVERSITY
, 2013, 183 pages; 3605561

Abstract:

Businesses and governmental agencies are increasingly reliant on virtual
teams composed of team members in different location. However, such virtual
teams face all the interpersonal challenges inherent in working in a group,
plus additional challenges that are a consequence from communicating
through electronic methods. Numerous technological tools are available to
facilitate electronic communication, and some organizations provide
Collaborative Technology Skills Training (CTST) to virtual team members to
help them select and use these tools.

In this study, the researcher investigated whether CTST improves virtual
team effectiveness by quantifying relationships between CTST and five
components of team effectiveness: knowledge sharing, trust, cohesion,
performance, and satisfaction. The researcher designed a survey based on an
extensive literature review to allow respondents to quantify and describe
their virtual team experiences, including information on any CTST they
received and their perceptions of the five components of team
effectiveness. Prior to the main research study, a panel of experts used
the Delphi method to evaluate the survey, commenting on structure, content,
and applicability to the research questions. The researcher then evaluated
the temporal reliability and internal reliability of the survey. For the
research study, the researcher invited over 1000 members of virtual teams
to complete the online, self-report survey. Data were analyzed using MANOVA
to investigate and confirm that CTST significantly affected components of
team effectiveness. Results of this study can be used to improve CTST,
thereby increasing the effectiveness of virtual teams.

Virtual Teams: Opportunities and Challenges for e-Leaders

Virtual Teams: Opportunities and Challenges for e-Leaders ☆

Abstract

In
the globalized world with crucial technological changes, leaders are
facing unforeseen opportunities as well as challenges while striving to
reach their objectives. Such changes have led to organizational
restructurings and implied rethinking of leadership functions and
practices. Changing organizational structures, from traditional
hierarchical towards lower and more flexible ones, have made leaders
organize work in new ways. Teams account for one new way of organizing
work and reaching organizational goals. Likewise, globalized markets
have made leaders search for new solutions to meet the needs of
customers. In consequence, organizations strive for competitive
advantages through downsizing, subcontracting, joint ventures, strategic
alliances, and other collaborative and network-based alternatives which
are typically facilitated by virtual teams. Virtual teams are
geographically and organizationally dispersed teams that function over
time zones. Due to such dispersion, physical contact in virtual teams is
reduced or lacking altogether which means that collaboration is enabled
by IT-solutions such as computer- based communication. This kind of
electronically facilitated team work is known to imply opportunities as
well as challenges for today's global e-leaders. Research on virtual
teams suggests that organizational success greatly depends on
leadership. However, it remains unclear what kind of leaders, and more
specifically, which leadership skills, behaviors or practices contribute
to effective virtual teams. To add knowledge on the field and fill such
research gap, this article aims at exploring e-leadership and answering
these questions.
