Abstract

The
prevalence of Virtual Team (VT) configurations in organizations has
come to challenge the relevance of traditional management practices
based on traditional, physically collocated teams. Creativity—a topical
and multidisciplinary issue—has been under-researched within the context
of virtuality. Predicated on the premise that creativity may be
expressed differently in the context of VTs, I draw the conceptual
foundations for this research from the fields of virtuality (i.e. VTs)
and creativity, and use engineering design as the empirical context,
with the aim of pursuing a better understanding of creativity in
relationship with virtuality in the context of Virtual Design Teams
(VDTs). Design constitutes a pertinent empirical context because (a)
designers have to deliver outputs requiring creativity; and (b) their
work is increasingly accomplished in VDT environments. I report on the
findings from three case studies involving temporary VDTs. Studies 1 and
2 comprised student engineers. Study 3 was a comparative case study
focusing on a team of professional engineers, who completed one design
task while physically collocated (face-to-face, F2F) and another one
while geographically dispersed (virtually), with the aim of isolating
factors that are unique to virtuality. With an interpretive stance
guiding this research, the same analytical approach for each case study,
and with the team serving as the unit of analysis, I analysed the
collected data (interview data, observations, video recordings,
photographic material, documents, communication extracts, design and
other outputs) qualitatively with the use of visual and thematic
analysis. The thesis makes the following theoretical contributions: (a)
it advances understanding of creativity within the VDT lifecycle; (b) it
elicits factors influencing creativity in the temporary VDT context;
and (c) it explains how the unique characteristics of virtuality
influence creativity within this context. The thesis’ limitations as
well as implications for research and practice are also discussed.

Abstract

Commercialization
in university has increasingly been considered as a complementary and
attractive solution to new technology innovation and product marketing.
However, the rate of commercialization amongst academic researchers and
inventors has been discouraging. The aim of this study was to identify
the problems and issues on the process of innovation and
commercialization and then improve the commercialization rate in
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). To achieve these goals seven
factors were examined to identify how they affect on the university’s
innovation and commercialization. These factors were market driven
innovation, financial support, marketing and selling strategy, improve
technology, time to market and time constrain, the relationship between
university and industry as well as the university policy and system with
the special focus on the the relationship between university and
industry and its effect on the commercialization rate in UTM. This study
was based on a qualitative research method and was designed to use a
case study approach. A total of sixteen face-to-face interviews were
conducted. Respondents were chosen from inventors, academic researchers
and Innovation and Commercialization Centre staff in UTM. The researcher
utilized the content-analysis approach to analyze the data obtained
from the semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that, the
most critical factor was relationship between university and industry
and role of financial support. This study also addressed the
implications and recommendation for research and practitioners.
Suggestions were provided to enhance the role of academic researchers
and inventors toward commercialization.

Abstract

The primary aim of the current paper is to
explore ways in which organizations can benefit from virtual
environments to expand
their social and professional spheres. Applying the
theory of third places to virtual worlds, our conceptual model
incorporates
practical organizational affordances within three
composite dimensions. First, we propose that through their unique,
supportive
and neutral environments, virtual worlds may reduce
the prevalence of social hierarchies, via decreasing the emphasis on
predetermined
ranks, stereotypes, and cultural or geographic
variation. Second, we posit that via encouraging open communication
within
the form of synchronous and real-time interactions,
virtual worlds enable efficient teamwork and collaborative learning.
Finally,
we emphasize that these friendly, secure, and
supportive environments may contribute to the reduction of certain
work-related
stressors, and in turn promote professional
development activities. We conclude by discussing practical implications
and future
research directions.

Revisiting the determinants of citation counts in scientific publication

Revisiting the determinants of citation counts in scientific publication

Abstract

Using a rich data set integrating information about researchers' funding
and publication in the province of Quebec, this paper intends to
identify the main determinants of their citation count. Using two-stage
least squares to control for endogeneity, the results confirm the
significant relationship between the number of articles and citation
counts. Our results also show that scientists with more articles in
higher impact factor journals generally receive more citations. In terms
of research team structure, the team size has a positive impact on the
number of citations. Hence the greater visibility provided by a more
prolific scientific production, better journals, and more co-authors,
all contribute to increasing the perceived impact of articles. The paper
also shows no gender bias which means that both male and female receive
the same number of citations. In most regressions for different fields
and disciplines, the amount of funding from different types does not
have a significant effect.

Abstract

In order to learn about the coverage
of Ibero-American journals by the JCR 2012-Web of Science and SJR
2012-Scopus indexes, both indexes were examined during the first
fortnight of September 2013, so as to find the number of Ibero-American
journals, their field of knowledge and the quartile they are at. The
number of Ibero-American journals in JCR amounts to 375, while in SJR it
is 1044, there being an important concentration in Spain and Brazil. In
order to observe the whole region in a horizontal perspective, we
propose its division into three sub-regions: Iberian Peninsula (Spain
and Portugal), Brazil and therest of Latin America. Iberian Peninsula
and Brazil concentrate more than 60% of the publications, whereas in
Latin America, the weight of Mexico, Colombia and Chile implies
invisibility for other countries. The heaviest weight leans toward the
natural sciences, with under-representation of social sciences and
humanities, whose local/national journals are the most suitable channels
to disseminate research results. Although some findings may be of
interest to the international community, most of them are specific
problems to their countries, where, the local media are the natural
diffusion channel to disseminate its work, without being necessarily
part of an worldwide scientific dialogue. At both indexes, the
positioning of Ibero-American journals is very low, with only five
Spanish journals in the first citation quartile in JCR, whilst in SJR
there are 32 journals in the first quartile, of which 29 are edited in
Brazil and Spain, and the rest are published in Mexico, Argentina and
Peru.

Abstract

Measuring the number of papers which
are published each year, publication productivity is the factor which
shows the reputation of universities and countries. However, the effect
of growing economy and using internet on the publication productivity in
Asian countries has not been discovered yet. The present research is
going to figure out the publication productivity among the elite
universities in Asian countries and also ten top universities around the
world in the last twenty years (from 1993 to 2012). Furthermore, the
current research is aimed to study the relationship among publication,
gross domestic product (GDP) and internet usage. It is worth to mention
that the publication of the top Ten Malaysian Universities was regarded
for the similar period of time. To get the exact numbers of documents
like papers, conference articles, review papers and letters which are
published by the universities in the last twenty years, the writer of
the same paper used the Science Direct database. Moreover, the data for
GDP and the number of internet usage was collected through the World
Bank database (World Data Bank). To compare all kinds of
publications,one-way ANOVAwas used and to investigate the impact of
economic growth and internet usageon publication productivity, multiple
regression analysis was applied. The results showed that therate of
publication growth was 1.9, 20.9, and 65.5 % in top universities in the
world, ASEAN countries and Malaysia, respectively. The results also
showed thatthere was a positive and significant correlationbetween GDP
and the number of internet users with the number of publications in
ASEAN and Malaysian universities. Internet usagehad much more influence
in comparison withthe GDP in predicting the number of publicationsamong
these groups except for top ten Malaysian universities from 2003 to
2012. In summary, publication trends in top ten Malaysian and ASEAN
universities are promising. However, policy makers and science
managersshouldspend much more percentage of their GDP on Internet
facilities and research studies that their outputs lead to more rapid
economic growthand internet usage.

Abstract

This study uses citation analysis
from two citation tracking databases, Google Scholar (GS) and ISI Web of
Science, in order to test the correlation between them and examine the
effect of the number of paper versions on citations. The data were
retrieved from the Essential Science Indicators and Google Scholar for
101 highly cited papers from Malaysia in the field of engineering. An
equation for estimating the citation in ISI based on Google scholar is
offered. The results show a significant and positive relationship
between both citation in Google Scholar and ISI Web of Science with the
number of versions. This relationship is higher between versions and ISI
citations (r = 0.395, p<0.01) than between versions and Google
Scholar citations (r = 0.315, p<0.01). Free access to data provided
by Google Scholar and the correlation to get ISI citation which is
costly, allow more transparency in tenure reviews, funding agency and
other science policy, to count citations and analyze scholars'
performance more precisely.
