This Scientific Writing Seminar is held as a response to meet the
individual’s need to acquire specific knowledge and skills to write and
publish scientific manuscripts and the institution’s needs to enhance
research.



 This seminar targets post-graduate students, researchers and academic
staff who conduct research and need to develop successful scientific
writing skills.



In this seminar, participants will be taught the structure of a
scientific paper, and how to prepare a scientific manuscript for
publication in a peer-reviewed journal.



The lectures in this seminar cover : Importance of writing, Types of
scientific  writing & Paper Structure; Writing the title, abstract,
keywords; Introduction Formulating the Research Questions &
Objectives; Writing Methods & Materials; Writing Results &
Discussion; Managing References & Citation; Writing a review paper;
case study, commentary, Technical note, Dealing with language;
Manuscript submission; Dealing with revision & rejection and
Publication Ethics.

There will be limited places in the seminar. So early application is advised.

Abstract

Collaboration
between buyer and the supplier has been widely studied in the
contemporary research to enhance the efficiency of the product
development process. Early involvement of stakeholders in development
leads to reduced development time and cost and enhanced quality. The
current study presents an approach termed as ‘collaborative and lean’
(C&L) approach to new product development (NPD). It involves
application of lean principles in a collaborative environment between an
automotive component supplier and the original equipment manufacturer
(OEM). The study compares the deployment of two methodologies of
development – generic process and the C&L process for developing the
same part by a supplier for two different OEMs. Development with one
OEM was done using generic process and the other using the C&L
process. The study uses value stream mapping of the various phases of
the development and attempts to understand the application of the
proposed approach in the automotive domain. It highlights the potential
of a combined C&L approach in reducing non-value-adding activities,
cycle time and effort during NPD. The study attempts to enhance the
understanding of NPD in a collaborative environment and explores the
possible merits of the proposed approach.

Abstract



The development of extensive and effective programs and
processes for rural growth and sustainable development has been viewed
as a factor for economic development. This is said to be enhanced
through the provision and availability of technical and critical
infrastructures on which the Small and Medium Manufacturing Enterprises
(SMMEs) thrived positively.  The SMMEs represents agents of economic
transformation to the society on wealth and employment creation, thus
representing well over 90% of all manufacturing enterprises in the
world. However, it is also a common occurrence that every year many of
these small firms are forced to close their doors. Most of the SMMES do
prefer the urban centres due to the availability of some critical
infrastructure and there exist dearth of technical and critical
infrastructures for Manufacturing and technology development in the
rural areas.  This paper provides an insight towards the sustainability
of SMMEs activities in Nigeria especially in the areas of manufacturing
development and Rural growth, owing to the vast natural raw materials
available, with the discussion anchoring around local manufacturers
which has not been really encouraged in meeting the desired aims of
trade and investment liberation, a major source of export via the
concept of the provision, sustenance and maintenance of critical and
technical infrastructures as part of the strategy.

Abstract

Problem
statement: Although, literature proves the importance of the technology
role in the effectiveness of virtual Research and Development (R&D)
teams for new product development. However, the factors that make
technology construct in a virtual R&D team are still ambiguous. The
manager of virtual R&D teams for new product development does not
know which type of technology should be used. Approach: To address the
gap and answer the question, the study presents a set of factors that
make a technology construct. The proposed construct modified by finding
of the field survey (N = 240). We empirically examine the relationship
between construct and its factors by employing the Structural Equation
Modeling (SEM). A measurement model built base on the 19 preliminary
factors that extracted from literature review. The result shows 10
factors out of 19 factors maintaining to make technology construct.
Results: These 10 technology factors can be grouped into two constructs
namely Web base communication and Web base data sharing. The findings
can help new product development managers of enterprises to concentrate
in the main factors for leading an effective virtual R&D team. In
addition, it provides a guideline for software developers as well.
Conclusion: The second and third generation technologies are now more
suitable for developing new products through virtual R&D teams.
